Variety sets 10 Euro Directors to Watch

Directors in focus at next month's Karlovy Vary fest

Ten of Europe’s most talented emerging directors will be in focus at Variety’s 10 Euro Directors to Watch sidebar at next month’s Karlovy Vary Film Festival.

The sidebar highlights films selected by Variety critics presented in association with the fest and European Film Promotion, part of the EU’s Media Program.

Launched 14 years ago as Variety Critics’ Choice, the July 3-4 sidebar has become one of the most popular events of the Czech Republic fest.

The chosen 10 tend to be first- and second-time directors and prizewinners from the international fest circuit.

Alissa Simon, Variety critic and liaison for the sidebar, said, “The selected directors are notable for their freshness, invention and passion.”

Variety executive editor Steven Gaydos added: “Today the small, adventurous, often groundbreaking works of these Euro talents are watched by agents, producers and execs in Hollywood with great interest and urgency. In the pages of Variety you now see a rush to represent and employ new European filmmakers and you see the announcements of new Hollywood films that are in the dynamic, creative hands of these new European directors.”

The 10 directors and films are: Lisa Aschan, “She Monkeys,” Sweden; Claudio Cupellini, “A Quiet Life,” Italy; David Dusa, “Flowers of Evil,” France; Jannicke Systad Jacobsen, “Turn Me On, Goddammit,” Norway; Zuzana Liova, “The House,” Slovak Republic; Alexander Maftei, “Hello! How are You?” Romania; Valdis Oskarsdottir, “King’s Road,” Iceland; Yasemin Samdereli, “Almanya,” Germany; Hans Van Nuffel, “Oxygen,” Belgium: and Ben Wheatley, “Kill List,” U.K.
