GRACE JONES : THE MUSICAL OF MY LIFE
A film by SOPHIE FIENNES
Documentary TV series | 8 x 26'
SYNOPSIS
Grace is in Jamaica to attend the Jones Family Re-union in Kingston. There are many ghosts here – and some disapproving relatives. Memories of childhood come to life. We visit Spanish Town where the small Jones children were left by their parents (who settled in the USA to pursue Evangelical vocations) to be raised by their grandmother and step-grandfather. Grace’s stage persona is rooted in a response to her violent and repressive Jamaican church upbringing – if you can’t beat them, impersonate them.
The film works through contrasts – between the alternating states of Grace – between the natural and the artificial and with the juxtaposition between narrative layers that include international one-off gigs in all their grunge and glamour (paths cross with Kate Moss, Jarvis Cocker and milliner Philip Treacy), the London recording sessions and the trip to Jamaica
